has anybody effectively connected a cd/mp3 player with the factory player still in place and got everything to work and be done smoothly? thank you......

Yep! I used to use a portable CD player that had an adapter that slipped into the cassette slot. I see now that the same thing exists and can also play MP3 stuff. It was an Aiwa.

No reason why not. I have an in-dash cassette player . . . a separate in-dash CD player, and also a separate in dash DVD player. All work.

I didn't have to connect it . . . it came that way . . . is pretty standard in most new GM cars now. :)

Seriously, you best bet would probably be to leave your in-dash cassette player alone, and install a separate power amplifier for the MP3 deck, and then use the car's speakers with a a selector switch.
