Install OS on USB stick vs. HDD

Hello,

I have a P3 800mhz that I'm trying to salvage into a regular internet surfer and videos computer. It has only 256mb RAM. I put linux in it and it runs fairly well until I have too many windows open. I was wondering if Installing it on a USB Flash will speed it up? I thought USB flash would be faster b/c there are no moving parts but when I saw the mb/s of flash and hdd it was totally the opposite. Anyone have any insight in this?

Thanks,
Horace

As far as I can remember, USB keys are generally only used for portability. It's not your hard drive that's making Linux run badly, it's likely your lack of ram.

Which distro are you using?

Internal hard drives have faster transfer speeds than external ones, whether flash memory or magnetic drive. As Alone said, if you add another 256MB stick of memory in there you should see a big difference.
