Install Linux on dell Inspiron 8000

I have been trying to install Mandrake 7.2 on a new Dell Inspiron, but the computer freezes as soon as it starts probing the pcmcia ports (even if there are no pcmcia cards installed). The port seems to be ok, since I used it with windows with no problems. Any ideas. What is the command to install without probing the pcmcia?

has a solution of sorts. may be beyond the abilities of a first timer though. also kernel 2.4 includes some of the stuff by defualt they talk about
