Install Half Life 2 Without Steam.

Finally got my copy of half life and the first dreaded thing I noticed is that it installed Steam.

I hate Steam and have no use for it and would like to remove it. I really don't care about online multiplayer gameplay at least until I finish the single player game.

And with everything I hear about valve disabling some keys for some reason or other I do not want to be at any risk of loosing the single player for any reason, so I do not want to link Half Life to any Steam account until I have to.

Anybody know if I can run/activate the game without running steam and not create any steam account for it yet.

Thanks

Sorry, thought I was posting in the Software forum.

Can one of the Mods please move this thread into software forum please.

Or should I just repost in the software forum myself?

There are ways around it, but you'll likely be banned from steam permanently if you use those.

Since he has no use for steam, shouldn't bother him :)

So how about using steam but not have to log in every time. That would be horrible and insanely slow, not to mention I am screwed if my connection goes sown or want to take it on the road.

And as far as being banned, I really don't care that much if I can not link my key to steam and I can always make a disposable email address for the steam account. But having the single player locked or inaccessible is not something I call fun under any circumstances.

Yeah, the poor people who PAID for the game can get locked out, merely because they desire to bypass STEAM.

I figure if you have a bought-and-paid for game, just get the hacked version and install that, bypassing STEAM altogether. It's not completely kosher, according to the license "agreement" - but honestly, it falls under "fair Use" since you paid in full for the priviledge to play the game.

Just my 2 cents worth.

If you're not connected to the internet when you try to run it, steam will run in offline mode and let you play the game.

lol good one jmorison.. way to resurrect a thread that was dying and on its way out... Its HOURS since the last post and this had gone way down the line and now here it is on top again just so you could point out the obvious "software forums". LOL :) Just thought that was ironic that your post resurrected it to the wrong forum! hehehe...

Are you sure? I bought HL2 too, it's on the way and I really don't like that forced registration. I can live happily without steam....

Holy freaking cow... Steam is required to play HL2. Just install it and quit your whining!

Yes, after the initial registration, you can play in offline mode, but you still need Steam. It this really that difficult?

Apparently, comprehension is not on some people's trait list.
