Install Fiesty Fawn without a DVD drive?

TallBill

The DVD drive on my laptop is busted. I don't feel like spending $60 for a usb drive but I need to load Ubuntu on the laptop. Is there any other way to do the install? I have a laptop HD usb enclosure if that helps.

should be possible. but why install fiesty when you can install gutsy? gutsy is pretty damned good, speaking from experience.

1. I've never heard of Gutsy

2. I have Ubuntu burned to a DVD already

3. Laptop will have very minimal use so it's not uber important at the moment.

So should I pull the lappy's HD, put it in the enclosure and install Ubuntu on another machine, then plop it back in? Will that even work?

No, you can get 'em on both CD and DVD.

TallBill, you can order, for free, the latest release of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Edubuntu from Canonical. I usually get them in about 2 weeks.

I'd give it pretty good odds. The mostly likely error you'll run into is the bootloader being confused about the order of hard drives when you switch systems (and thus trying to boot off the wrong one), but that's usually easy enough to fix.

There are also ways to install from a USB flash drive, but they can get a bit hairy: https://help.ubuntu.com/commun...tallation/FromUSBStick
