The DVD drive on my laptop is busted. I don't feel like spending $60 for a usb drive but I need to load Ubuntu on the laptop. Is there any other way to do the install? I have a laptop HD usb enclosure if that helps.

So should I pull the lappy's HD, put it in the enclosure and install Ubuntu on another machine, then plop it back in? Will that even work?
I'd give it pretty good odds. The mostly likely error you'll run into is the bootloader being confused about the order of hard drives when you switch systems (and thus trying to boot off the wrong one), but that's usually easy enough to fix.
