not too long ago, i reinstalled windows on my new hdd. yesterday, i decided i wanted to play battlefield 1942 and installed it, the road to rome expansion, and the latest patch from EA. i didnt try to crack the game or anything, both battlefield and the expansion are legit copies. but when i tried to play the game, it doesnt do anything. i double click the .exe, the cd is in my drive, i get the beginning logo, then the windows error sound comes on, and the game quits. i see a flash of a dialog box appear and disappear after i hear the error noise. i'm not sure if its and error message or the game just quitting. any ideas on what my problem is and how to fix it?

thanks,
Jorgie

Any other games do that? Are all your drivers up to date including sound card ones? I'd try uninstalling it and then just install BF'42 first and see if that runs.

My first step would be to start the executable from a command prompt. You have a good chance of getting some sort of error message in that window when the program craters.

I have herd pressing the space bar at the flash solves some problems apart from that I have to double click on the exe twice as I always get booted the first time, 1942 is having lots of problems especially with sound in the game.....

i've uninstalled and reinstalled it a half dozen times. i tried to run battlefield right after installing it without the expansion or patch, and it still wouldnt work. this is the only game that does it too. and before i reinstalled windows, it worked fine.

are you forcing the refresh rate to above 60hz? if you are, set it back down to 60. Some games don't like high refresh rates.

This is one of them... it's a flaw that EA built into it because of the Windows XP refresh rate bug. God only knows why EA designed their game around a bug in Windows. Complete morons if you ask me... give me a few minutes and I'll find you a link to a site that explains how to get around it.

*EDIT*
"If you are using an Nvidia card and the refresh rate fix, try this: go to
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings
then open:
VideoDefault.con
with notepad and look for renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0, then change the 0 to a 1, so it looks like:
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1
then save it. That fixes my problems, hope it works for you. "

thanks jeff, that was it. i had completely forgotten that i had done the refresh rate fix, and would need to fix that. still cant believe EA would make a game like that.

thanks again,
jorgie
