Install a case fan over the heatsink fan

So I have a couple of spare case fans lying around and with the stock single slot cooler on my 8800 GT, I have a lot of clearance to set things up.

I already have 2 fans set up.... 1 right in front of the fan and the other behind it. They are both perpendicular to the card to direct airflow from the front to the back.

Would it help things if I attached a 92mm fan right on top of the stock fan to blow air into the card? I figure the extra ooomph will help some....

EDIT: So I just did that and idle temps are 1C lower and load temps are 3C lower... but these figures are within normal margin of error/luck.

How much CFM do you think the stock fan is pushing? Probably not much.

Try this. Mount one of the case coolers OUTSIDE the case, with the pci slots removed. Try it to both suck the air out from under the card, and to blow cold air in.

You may need to play with the other case fans on your rig for best effect. I've found there's almost always a pocket of very warm air right under a single slot graphics card (especially in narrower cases) and getting some airflow to that pocket has amazing results.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing... but the case fan is a PCI and would be blowing down away from the card.. would just moving the air around help? My setup is nearly the same as the OP's.

Did you update the bios on your card? It could be locked at 30% always if you didn't.

And nothing is wrong with the cooler, the card just puts out alot of heat and should have been a dual slot

I actually did this exact thing with the 2900XT I had .

I did it to help cool at idle as the fan would ramp up and down even at idle, but after I zip tied a fan over the intake fan it helped keep it cooler "at idle".

Really didn't help that much at load.
