I am trying to install 98SE over 98 by using the full version CD of SE (Long story but I own the 98SE and lost the 98 upgradeCD). I get a message that states the full version CD is systems without an OS already installed. Since I have an OS already installed the installation halts.

I know that the installation program looks for a specific file to determine if it can use the install CD but am at a loss as to what that file is called.

Anyone have an idea as to the file's name?

rename your win.com, located in c:\windows, to win.xxx. DO NOT DELETE IT! (you'll want to be able to rename it back to win.com should somthing go wrong).

That will allow the full version ot install.

sure do, just did this myself.

C:\windows\win.com

just rename it to win.(your choice of extension), restart the machine with the 98 floppy and cd in the drive, and the rest is straight forward.
