First of all:
*This is a hardware related question even though I speak of XP and drivers because my problem -PROBABLY- is related to different hardware configurations!*

Because of OEM hardware customizations, ATI refuses to release ATI Mobility drivers themselves (Passing the buck to the OEM that built your computer). My Compaq Presario laptop, uses the ATI Mobility 128 M3 (ATI Rage 128 Pro based). At the time, it was the ONLY chipset considered capable of running Quake3 and Unreal Tournament well on a laptop (It was, "THE Gamer's Laptop Video Chip."). Out of the box, its drivers couldn't even run Unreal Tournament right (Garbled textures after a few minutes). Sure enough, the driver on every other manufacturer's site had updated but not Compaq's. I forced Dell's drivers to install despite "hardware differences" by making a few modifications to the INF file. Dell's were flawless. Compaq NEVER updated.
Then comes XP.
Compaq's official statement is that they will not be releasing an XP compatible driver because XP has built in support. They TOLD me so. What's horrible about XP's driver is not that OpenGL is just buggy or old, but rather it's TOTALLY ABSENT from the driver! What good is a capable chipset if its drivers are THAT neglected? Dell's ATI drivers were harder to get installed this time around, but I got it working at least.
Now, I have a new problem.
I'm a big fan of using the Hibernate function, but when resuming from Hibernate, OpenGL software will not run. I assume that this is because Dell hardware is configured differently and the driver only supports it with Dell hardware, but it may be just a driver bug that affects Dell systems too. Before I dive into the the driver modifications any more, I need to know if it's a hardware or software problem (This IS in the correct forum).
I need to know if it does this on Dell laptops too before I try. Does anyone here have a Dell system running WinXP (I know no M3/M4 systems shipped w/ XP) and the latest M3/M4 drivers? If so, please launch Quake3 Arena and exit. Then Hibernate and resume (NOT Sleep thanks, Hibernate is different). After that, start Quake3 again and see if it runs correctly (I get a flashing garbled screen).

Thnx!

BTW: If it is hardware related, and I manage to get the drivers working on my M3 system, I will of course, release the modified INF/file combination for others stuck in my situation :)

you might want to try and look thru the drivers that come with winXP (if you haven't already ), windows doesn't use them automatically, but if you tell the wizzard to not search, then select display devices, there are quite a few ATi drivers. i can't remember if there is a compaq version of this driver, but windows has quite a few listed. just a thought;)

Yes, there is a Compaq version installed by default. THAT is the one with no OpenGL support. I'm sure none of them have it, which is why all other manufacturers have made XP compatible drivers.

Kick-ass site (Thnx)... Explains alot of what I had to figure out :)
Can't try anything I see in it right now because my lappy is in for repairs :(
Untill I get it back, does anyone have a report on the hibernate situation on Dell systems?

Hey, sorry for not responding sooner. I don't have Q3 installed, and I've been busy the past few days. I have a Dell Insprion 5000e with the 8mb version of the rage 128 (forgot if that's m3 or m4), and version 6.13.3268 of the driver (should be the latest). I just installed Q3 with the latest point release. I ran the demo and quit. Went into hibernate and resumed. When I started Q3 again I got a white flashing screen. I could still move my keys and hear the sounds you would normally hear though. Hope that helps.

edit: oh yeah, winxp (pro) of course.

rage3d.com is the site for all ATI videocard-related stuff. From a "search":

ATI Rage Mobility-128 Video driver for Windows XP (Dell).

<< Dell has released WindowsXP drivers for the ATI Mobility 128 M3/M4. Here's a snip:

Release Title: Video: ATI Mobility 3 / Mobility 4, Driver, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v. M6.59-010830m-1364C, A00
Release Date: 10/19/2001
Description: ATI Rage Mobility-128 Video driver for Windows XP.
>>

I hope it helps with your Notebook . . . I expect I will have troubles (eventually) with my ATI Mobility Radeon's drivers for my Dell Inspiron 4100.

Worst comes to worst, you might consider a dual-boot O/S, XP and 98.
