Inspiron E1705/9400 - Napa already?

I think it's a little strange that the only two GPU options are Intel and the Geforce Go 7800 Ultra. Of course, these might not be the only config options (and this is for Dell's UK site), so maybe there will be a midrange option for an MR X1600 or something. Opinions?

the x1600 might appear in future models other than the 9xxx series. also, i think i read somewhere (forget where) that asus has exclusive rights to the x1600 for the time being

i must have misread then about it being exclusive. but it seems like the asus A7G is the only one out now that has the x1600. the acer will be out soon though.

I know the D620 has the option of Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 or 256 mb nVidia Quadro NVS 110M with TurboCache. You have the option of the Core Solo T1300 or Core Duo T2300, T2400, T2500 or T260 for your processors. Plus it's finally widescreen.

Last i knew of there were no ATI based graphics chips in Dell lappys... As for the most part ATI and AMD are paired together. And Intel and Nvidia are.

There are ATI graphics within Dell Laptops. Just look at the 600M (Radeon 9000), 6000 (x300), Latitude 810 (x300 or x600), 9300 (x300 or Nvidia 6800 Go)

the whole new E/B/XPS naming convention makes things a lot worse. i liked the old naming/numbering style

I agree. I guess they're going for the whole E=Entertainment convention or something. But how they group 1705 as the successor to the 9300 is beyond me.

~$2000, with a 2-13-06 ship date for the "base" model

I just noticed the 9400 on the U.S. Business site. Why the hell are they using two different model #'s for the same machine at the same time?

What would you suggest??? Isn't that the whole point of a base offering!!! If you check Intel's price sheet [just posted], the graphics version of the 945 chipset is only ~$5 more than the plain version. A clear incentive to the lappy maker to offer a functional graphics solution at an attractive price.

That question was posted on the Dell site and there was no clear answer. The concensus was that Dell would probably use different MBs to save cost. I'm not sure that makes sense, but I'm not going to take any chances when I order.
