Inspiron 5547: Pulling my hair out!

Trying to clone my mom's failing Samsung spin drive to a PNY SSD and the computer just refuses to boot from the solid state drive no matter what after the operation completes. Normal HDD boots fine under AHCI, which is for some reason the only mode I can select. This basic op works without issue 9 out of 10 times but I've been pulling my hair out for the last 2 days trying to get the thing to cooperate.

I have updated the BIOS on the laptop from A04 to A10 and that did not allow me to configure any settings any differently. A brief search indicates that others have run into similar issues but I can find no concrete solution. The cables are not the issue because the BIOS detects the SSD as the fixed HDD, but other than that there is no sign of it anywhere listed as a bootable device. WTH.

Used AOMEI initially, just cloning a disk... then deleted the drive twice with GParted; used Acronis TI 2018 but that didn't work either

Did you prepare and use TI-2018 bootable media? That lets you clone without going through Windows - usually much better.

going to try that next, basically the only thing I haven't tried

finally booted after rebuilding BCD, but took a few tries. looks like all is good aside from a couple of drivers that must have gotten messed up with the BIOS flash. fixed now though, thanks!
