inspiron 530 cpu upgrade question

just got a dell inspiron 530 tower, no the slim lime unit, got it configured with the Celeron Processor 420 (1.60GHz, 800 FSB) and 512mb DDR2 667mhz SDRAM.. only cause it was cheaper at the outlet this way.

according to dell's and intel's spec's, this cpu uses the LGA 775 form factor.. i could be wrong.

anyone know if it's possible to swap out this cpu with the Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor.

both are lga775, it should work? dell does offer the dual core cpu as a upgrade option here

just don't know if thee using a diff mobo, they want $271 to go from celeron to 2.33 dual core, when for $280 i can get the 3.0 chip from newegg.

thanks.

It would definitely work, as any motherboard that can handle an E6550 will handle an E6850, but the power supply might struggle with a CPU that's running twice as fast. Probably it would work fine, just don't be surprised if you need to replace the power supply, because of lack of stability.

Just do your research. Most Dell power supplies used to be proprietary, and using a "normal" ATX psu would fry the motherboard. I know that not nearly as many of them are proprietary now, but I don't think that they use normal psu's in 100% of their systems yet.

the 530 uses a G33 motherboard, if you check their outlet sight, as well as configuring a new one, you can get one with a e6750, so i see no reason why a e6850 wouldnt work. The Inspiron 530 will also take the q6600 as well.

you definately do not need to upgrade your power supply.

Dell power supplies are highly under rated. I am running a dimensions 9200 system with a 375 watt power supply. My system includes an e6300, 2 hard drives, 4gb memory, and an overclocked 7950gt. i have been running this system for about a year now and it is extremely stable. Check your psu wattage and amps and post it here.
