I just bought a 1\2 working (I think I can fix it) Dell Inspiron 5150 from a guy here at work for $50 and I was needing a wireless card if I can get it running. (If not I'll just part it out.)

On ebay they have the Dell wifi card that goes in the bottom of the case and plugs into the built in antenna for about $25.

Or, might it be better to get one that plugs into the card slot?

I would like one that has a chip supported by the major open source wireless utilities (netstumbler, airsnort, etc.), and has drivers available for Linux.

Would the Dell work? Or would it just be better to go with a separate card... perhaps one of these? Or maybe there is something else that you would like to suggest.

Thanks!

You might want to check the netstumbler and airsnort websites to see what cards they support.

Netstumbler:
The Proxim models 8410-WD and 8420-WD are known to
work. The 8410-WD has also been sold as the Dell TrueMobile
1150, Compaq WL110, Avaya Wireless 802.11b PC Card, and
others.
Most cards based on the Intersil Prism/Prism2 chip set also
work.

Airsnort:
Cisco Aironet
Prism2 based cards using wlan-ng drivers or Host-AP drivers
Orinoco cards and clones using patched orinoco_cs drivers
Orinoc cards using the latest Orinoco drivers >= 0.15 with built in monitor mode support
And many others.
Windows: Any(?) card supported by Airopeek.

They seem like very general requirements....

Do you have any card(s) you have used in the past or particularly liked?
