Inspiron 4100 pointer problem

The problem is occasionally my touchpad will stop working, ie. it won't move the cursor but another mouse works fine, and if the touchpad is working the mouse icon will occassionally go all the way to one side of the screen and stay stuck there. Always requires a reboot to work correctly, and i have tried disabling and enabling the pointing stick and touch pad but I still have this problem any suggestions? beyond replacing the touchpad?

now the problem happens on the pointing stick & the pad, so technically i have to replace the keyboard & the touchpad, any other circuitry i should worry about?

Replace the keyboard and palmrest (the touchpad is incorporated in the palmrest) and you will be good to go. If you dig around the Dell site you can find the field replacement manual that will instruct you on how to go about it, in case you don't already know.
