Copied from the GH forum:

I know this is really ghetto-doggin it, but does anyone know what the REAL maximum RAM is for an Inspiron 3000? I heard on some websites I can put up to 384 RAM into it, but the Dell User Guide says only 128 max. I'm wondering if that has to do with the User Guide being so old and not aware of bigger SODIMMs of ram being available. I'm trying to effectively run XP Pro on it at a whopping 233 mhz of raw POWER!!! :D

Thanks in advance

I have one but I have upgraded the cpu to a celeron 366 that has the bx chipset on the cpu. I currently run 256mb plus the builtin 16mb.

Oh I forgot to say that XP runs VERY well on this laptop with my hitachi 30 gig drive.

XP Pro requires at least a 300MHz cpu and 128MB ram for full functionality. You should install Win 2K instead.

sweet guys, thanks for all your help. I might try

Does win2k require a boot disk?

I've heard upgrading cpus in laptops are near impossible, especially Dells (of any type, my experience). Is this true?

I had no problem. Just flash the bios to a 3200 and it will not boot. Pull the hinge and speaker covers off. Remove the keyboard and swap the cpu.
Dont get the PII @ 400 because it runs way too hot.
Check the forums at dell to get more info or PM me.
