Inspiron 2200 Memory Upgrades Help Needed

I just ordered the 400 dollar Inspiron 2200 for my girlfriend for Christmas. Got it with 256 megs of ram in order to properly and cheaply upgrade it. I don't know much about laptop memory. Can someone give me a recommendation on what to upgrade it with on a budget? I have no real clue about laptop memory specs.

Another stupid question, If I want to leave the factory 256 in under the keyboard, can I only upgrade with matching 256 module?

crucial.com - put in the model and choose which RAM you want to buy.

You can put a 512MB in the upgrade slot if you want...or whatever max it will take per stick - they don't have to match.
