Inspiron 1501 - nic does not connect

I have a dell inspiron 1501 running xp pro sp2. The onboard nic is enabled and appears fine in device manager. Though, it always shows as cable unplugged when it is plugged in. I've checked the cable, reinstalled the driver, enabled disabled the device, deleted from device manager. It does not work in safe mode with networking either. Lights on the nic don't light up...wireless only works sporadically.

Any ideas?
