I'm awaiting an 1100 that coming with a celeron 2.0 and a plain old CDROM drive. What I'm wondering is, which combo drives will work in this? Will the 2100 or 8200 drives fit in place of the CDROM? Also, can a mobile processor be used with this? One last question: can I use any 9.5mm HD to upgrade? Sorry, I'm new to laptops, don't really know much about them...

Thanks!

I'm afraid the Inspiron 1100 doesn't have a modular bay. :(

Dell Inspiron 1100 Tech Specs

Fixed Bay integrated in left side with choice of CD, DVD, CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW Combo or DVD+RW/+R (This bay configurable at time of purchase only)

You could use an external USB drive, but other than that you are out of luck.

I know that the drive is fixed, I was wondering if the fixed drive on another model would fit it. I've heard that the 8x00 will fit it, but I'm not sure.

if you change out the faceplate from the regular cd-rom and put it on the combo drive or cd-rw or dvd drive, and switch the caddy out it should work. I did that with an HP that i was told was not upgradeable due to it not being modular. But all newer drives are all teh same, just different faceplates and mounting caddy.

Thanks! That makes me feel a little better about not going for the upgrade. One last question... Can the dell mini-PCI card fit in the 1100? I've been told by some people that it can't, but the dell tech support guy told me that it would work (Truemobile 1300)
