Inspiron 1100 - Boot Issue

I have an older Inspiron 1100 I was cleaning up to sell and am having trouble with it. Initially it booted just fine (Ubuntu). Now when I reboot, it goes thru the splash screen for the OS, then I see an image thats sort of bar-code looking, then the boot completes, but the screen turns off.

If I pull the battery the unit appears to work fine. Could this be as simple as that?
