So Im sitting at lunch in the lunchroom and overheard a conversation amongst 3 people talking about their PC's. Now, being in IT I thought I had heard it all, but NO! This guy was talking about how he got these virii and the ensuing conversation amazed me.

First, he said he got these ~27~ viruses from...YOUTUBE! Thats right. He then goes on to tell his friends his AV had expired last week and hadnt had a chance to renew it yet. Now, correct me if Im wrong, but if an AV expires it just means it wont update...correct? Will it not continue to protect with the latest definitions? Well, anyway he said it was turned off now. He then goes on to say how these virii shut off his internet, but only AFTER "stealing his information". How he figures this I'll never know.

So now this has piqued my attention to see what else he says. The conversation revolves around PC's, and tell his friends that another friend of his has his router automatically shut off at 11:55 at night, because Vista "sends all your info to Microsoft at midnight every day".... I chuckle inside of course.

Oh but we arent done! He also says "You shouldnt use Logitech mice because the software that comes with it sends all the information on links you click to a database".

/sigh I dont know. I wanted to tell this guy he needs to unplug his PC, give it away, and stick with the TV. I apologize in advance to those who arent as knowing about PC's, but seriously. You cant make this stuff up!

What crazy things have you heard from friends?

Wow, Microsoft and Logitech want to know our history? I didn't know that...

And yes, you are correct, if AV expires it will continue to protect against viruses right up to the last definition it obtained. Anything new that comes in though will infect the system as if it was completely unprotected (about as fast as a sailor on leave in Thailand).

You didn't know about the transmissions Microsoft sends at midnight?

You should have told him that a tinfoil hat on his computer will stop the transmissions.

Reminds me of the time we had a user that put a nice porn pic as his wallpaper, and then tried to tell us it was a virus that did it. Of course, what really happened is that he was looking at poon at work, and then selected "set as desktop background" by mistake and then had no idea how to fix it. He looked a little panicked when I told him it was low priority and I'll be there in few days.

Good old days.

There is a small grain of truth to those things. There has been some "spyware" hidden in printer drivers and input device drivers in the past. There is also the Microsoft WGA tool that they have been pushing as part of their updates, and from what I understand, it does phone home at regular intervals. I deselect it and tell it to hide that update when I'm installing XP for people.

Edit: I should clarify. THe printer/input drivers were found to "phone home", I don't know if it was ever proven what data it was sending, but they made outbound connections to the internet. This is known.

Surely you're aware that the little led on your monitor is a camera which allows Microsoft to watch you.
