I find it hard to believe that this would actually go on in highschool, but this movie has piqued my curiosity

At my high school they supposedly used to roll freshman down the hill at the back of the school in trash cans. Funnily enough the only person it happened to while i was their wasn't a freshman, just a sophomore some kids hated.

I went to a school that did it.

It only stung for a few seconds and was better than wasting time in detention.

Edit for more info:

They gave you the option of either serving detention or being paddled, I always picked being paddled since the teachers made a point to be as careful as possible when they served the punishment.

I usually signed the paddle that I was punished with, which was kind of a tradition at the school.

Even in wood shop class I made a new paddle for my one teacher with some holes drilled out in it :p

This was in the 90's btw.

cousins of mine, who are from South Carolina, claimed that there schools still do this. it's been more than 10 years since they were in highschool, so I'm not sure if it goes on today. and yeah, the town fully participated in the hazing, esp of the girls (these cousins are female). There was an official parade, I believe.

I had a similar experience as a Freshman in college (not in the US), though not exactly paddles as they were using rolled-up-really-tight (and i mean reallly tiiight) newspapers which at its tightest pretty much equals a wooden stick. This was a hazing-type initiation event to become a member of the student organization (think greek fraternity), although unlike frat pretty much most if not all the freshmen in the university went through this. it's pretty wild :D

I absolutely loved the movie btw! :)

They actually do that at a certain school in SoCal

It's tightly wrapped newspaper, with tape, with more newspaper, with more tape

it effectively becomes a paper bat

Paddled? When I was in grade school, I would get pummeled with a wooden bat for arriving at school late.

Shit, I am from Taiwan, everyone got beat up by the teacher back then. Think 2 metre long rattan with a diameter of about 3cm. my 'home form' teacher was obsessed with having the best home form in terms of test average. The rule was that if you got less than 80% on your test, she will hit your palm with that big ass rattan once per percent. I happened to be student number 1. Plus I totally sucked at school... So she sees the test score and gets totally pissed, me being number one means she had full strength. Oh, did I mention she was pregnant at the time thus subject to huge mood swings?

Good times...

As an added benefit, a fellow student's parents happen to own a frigging rattan furniture factory. He delivered a bundle of said rattans to class. And reassured the home form teacher she just needed to call him when she ran out and he would deliver the next day. She did need to reorder...

I went to a strict christian school growing up. Apparently part of the forms that you had to sign to go there had a stipulation saying that if a kid is bad, they can be paddled. I forget what I did (since I was in first grade) but I got called to the principals office and paddled. My mom threw a shit fit when she found out about it, ah good old corporal punishment.

Never been paddled but those nuns in elementary school sure were adept at cracking your knuckles with a ruler. They were like ninja nuns.

You can only hope for this return to sanity, but alas, the psychologists (the science class you take where the first thing they do is try and convince you it IS science at all), have taken over the courts.

Edit: Forgot, Carmel Jr. HS, Carmel, IN. Paddling was the policy, but I never had need of it. The fact that it was somewhat public (done outside class with the door open), and Bruce Breedon was 6'4" 400lbs, was deterent enough for me.
