Insomnia, is it a developed habit or a disease?

I haven't been sleeping well for a while now, and I still function well (... subjectively). For instance, I haven't slept tonight at all, and feel fine. Prior to this, I've had a few hours of sleep a night and don't feel any different than if I've had a lot of sleeps.

Sometimes, I'd wake up and feel beat up if I slept too much. Anyone else feel the same?

This is gonna sound lame but if you want good regular sleep you will need to exercise regularly... and a good bed will help too. All beds are NOT created equal.

Most of the time, I don't have a choice in bedding, but more often than not they are good quality beds.

I am a HUGE insomniac. I believe mine was developed from computers though. I just have a lot going on in the day and so when I come home I gotta do homework then I like to relax on the computer till 4 or 5 am (6 or 7 am on the weekends). If I grab a few hours of sleep so be it - it's usually better just to pull an all nighter though.

I really don't see a performance decrease - I have gotten used to it. I don't even need caffeine to stay up anymore - I just drink it occasionally as a social habit. To me I just like the night - and I love being a part of the insomniac/late night/internet culture - although it does make it hard to interact with my g/f and non-insomniac friends some.

I have compared it often to living two lives - since I am usually awake when others get their 8 hours of sleep. And for the comment on working out - to me working out actually helps me stay up even later since my body is processing food better and requires less sleep.

Just some thoughts at 4am... 😉

I have severe insomnia, but it's basically a developed habit. For me, I sometimes start thinking about things that are thought provoking and before I know it, it's 3 hours later and I've yet to fall asleep. I could see how a hormone or some sort of other deficiency might effect your sleep pattern, but I think for the mostpart it's just bad habits.

for me, its more like...there's stuff i *should* be doing and am not tired, so i put it off and tool around on the internet or w/e, then, eventually (4~8am weekends, 3~6 weekdays) i just give up and go to bed. it does affect me, i end up falling asleep in my classes and what not, but luckily i don't fall asleep at work...probably because i have internet access XD. as far as exercise making me tired, it puts me in the mental state that i'm trying to live healthier, so i end up going to bed earlier (sometimes). it depends on how i work out. if i do a long run, then i usually feel more like laying down that night. if i do push ups and sit ups and what not, then i usually feel more energized from it (especially since i tend to do that type of workout later at night anyway).

I went through a faze where I would stay up for days at a time, always feeling like I never had enough time to get things done during the day.

I would go to class at 10am till 4 pm
go to work at 5 till 12am
come home and surf AT/Do Homework/other stuff
then repeat the whole cycle again.

Sometimes I will pull an all nighter just because I'm not tired, or when I finally get tired its too late to get any sleep.
