Insomnia - Did you ever get treatment for it?

So, I have insomnia. I don't have severe insomnia. I would say it's mild. The usual I can't fall asleep type. There's also the fact that even after I fall asleep that I do wake up, but I usually forget that I woke up (unless I remember something specific about that time). Or, I wake up and remember it, but it was so short of a moment that it might have not mattered. Thus not being able to remember those sometimes too, or not being able to remember the amount of times that happened and knowing only that it did happen at least once. There's also in-and-out of consciousness. Awake, but still sort of dreaming thing. I don't know how many of you experience that, but it's weird.

Needless to say, I feel drained every fucking day. Sometimes it's worse than other days (like the, "I'm going 20+ mph on my bike down a hill and I could not give a fuck if I crashed right now" tired) and just more or less yawning and feeling hazy.

Anyway, it seems that I have all the kinds except the fall asleep and become wide awake in the middle of the night. That's uncommon for me. I've had that happen and that doesn't happen for me much anymore.

Taken different drugs for it. The one I am taking right now makes me fall asleep about an hour after I take it (That's very nice), but it also makes me EXTREMELY fucking tired every morning and does not keep me asleep. I mean, the amount of tired I was getting when I was first taking it made me crash on my bike multiple times. I would go into a turn and go, "fuck it" and just land on my ass/back/whatever. I'd usually lay there and go, "yep. This sucks. I want a nap." I missed most of my classes last term when taking that pill. I'd take it at midnight and wouldn't get out of bed until 2:00PM or later a lot of the time.

Now I'm taking half the dosage. It still sucks ass. I've missed class a few times because of it, but it's not as bad. It has the side effect of making me gain weight. So, it has at least 1 positive to it... Still, it's almost no better than just having the problem of falling asleep at night. I spend at least the same amount of time trying to sleep or wasting my time on sleep related matters.

Wall of text. One more thing, I didn't tell my doctor that I had trouble staying asleep. I never seem to remember that I have that trouble staying asleep until it's too late because I'm usually not wide awake. The wide awake where I am like, "I am definitely fucking awake and this is hell." It's more like, "huuurrrr I am awake-ish... god fucking damn.zz.zfuck..zzz...eerrrrrr...ZzzzzZzz." x30

TL;DR
I have sleeping problems. I take pills for it now. First one I took didn't work. Second one I am taking makes me crash on my bike. I take half of it now and it still sucks. Waiting on seeing my doctor for the third pill.

I find that I need a few hours to wind down before I can sleep. This means no work, no stress, just relaxing. Doesn't matter how tired I am, I need that wind down period.

Despite the fact this is a Trident thread...

What're you on right now? I'm currently "on" 150-250mg of Trazodone. My doc told me to start with 150, but if I need it I can tack on another 100mg. I stopped using it though since it made me feel pretty nauseated before I fell asleep.

Now I just use 150mg of diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Taking 75mg results in about 4.5 hours of sleep, tack on another hour for each 25mg increase. Makes me feel sleepy all damn day though. But I'll take that over finally getting to sleep at 3a and waking up at 530.

Edit: in response to Capt's post above mine... I eat a banana/fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, dinner varies. Swim about a kilometre every other day, if not every day. Makes me feel tired, but I still can't fall asleep. Bullshit

My doc had said I could take up to 100mg of trazodone when I started out. That didn't do almost anything. So, we switched to a different pill. It's mirtazapine. I take half a 15mg pill now instead of the regular 15mg.

I'm definitely gaining weight from it. I've never weighed more than I do right now. It's interesting. I'm going to start working out if I hit 140lb. (I'm about 130lb right now. That's 5lb-10lb up from usual.)

Did it make you feel nauseated? Might just be an individual side effect... I'll ask about the mirtazapine next time I see her. 100mg of Trazo didn't do me any good either fwiw, but I already weigh more than average (large frame + weightlifting + fat).

I've been on seven different medications since last September, so I'm not sure which is responsible, but I have noticed weight gain too. Sucks.

Bullshit it does. I eat well and exercise. Doesn't change the fact I'm too stressed out to sleep.

This. I eat mostly healthy and log 60+ miles per week, and still often have trouble sleeping. Stress, depression, and allergies all take a toll.

No. Not that I can recall. 100mg of trazo really did next to nothing for me.

The weight gain is perfectly fine for me. It's actually a desirable effect. I've been struggling with gaining weight all my life.

Yea, I have problems with sleep. It's not severe though so I usually just suck up that I can't fall asleep when I want. The one exception was when my migraines became near constant and I couldn't take that + being sleep deprived so I started taking a lot of PM Tylenol too. Doctor gave me ambien to take instead Tylenol, which kind of sucks as it makes me forget the last 3 or so hours of a day. Now, I take amytriptyline for preventing migraines and that makes me drowsy so while I still have minor problems sleeping it's almost non-existent now.

Try melatonin, get it at a vitamin store and a version of what your brain should be producing around the time the sun goes down. Naturally looking at bright screens and other lights can throw that off. I took it for quite awhile, recommend around 30 mins before bed, should make you start feeling tired, and once in bed should knock you out well enough and keep you there until morning. I think I was taking around 5mg, they make higher and lower doses.

I still think you need an anti depressant, I took a small dose for the past few months and it conveniently greatly regulated my sleep cycle, no longer need any help to get to sleep. I've had trouble sleeping for years, but a short time on Paxil and just like it should be.

1.) Observe basic sleep hygiene

Avoid napping during the day; it can disturb the normal pattern of sleep and wakefulness.
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol too close to bedtime. While alcohol is well known to speed the onset of sleep, it disrupts sleep in the second half as the body begins to metabolize the alcohol, causing arousal.
Exercise can promote good sleep. Vigorous exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. A relaxing exercise, like yoga, can be done before bed to help initiate a restful night's sleep.
Food can be disruptive right before sleep; stay away from large meals close to bedtime. Also dietary changes can cause sleep problems, if someone is struggling with a sleep problem, it's not a good time to start experimenting with spicy dishes. And, remember, chocolate has caffeine.
Ensure adequate exposure to natural light. This is particularly important for older people who may not venture outside as frequently as children and adults. Light exposure helps maintain a healthy sleep-wake cycle.
Establish a regular relaxing bedtime routine. Try to avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Don't dwell on, or bring your problems to bed.
Associate your bed with sleep. It's not a good idea to use your bed to watch TV, listen to the radio, or read.
Make sure that the sleep environment is pleasant and relaxing. The bed should be comfortable, the room should not be too hot or cold, or too bright.

2.) since you've tried melatonin, benadryl and trazodone it's not unreasonable to try some Ambien or Lunesta. Just ask your doctor. Those meds give you great quality sleep but are controlled substances and are habit forming if taken too often.

3.) consider that you might have obstructive sleep apnea. You may need a sleep study. Again discuss this with your doctor so he/she can properly explain it and examine you.

Sex works great for me. After sex I'm out like a light regardless of my sleeping position.

I wasnt able to get a full 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep until I purchased a philips goLite light therapy device, which I've been using for the past year and a bit. I was skeptical as I tried everything else included melatonin and all the other sleep aids. I highly recommend a blue light therapy device. Made an enormous difference in my ability to sleep soundly.

I used to go through periods in my life when I'd toss and turn a lot before falling asleep. I know that some people have said that exercise doesn't help them but since I started running on a regular basis I sleep a lot better.

Getting laid also helps me sleep :)

Treatment? On the nights I have insomnia I take advantage of it! You got extra hours every day to do stuff, heck to me that's an advantage.
