Inserting images / Why do tool tips only work sometimes?

1. I think inserting images here has changed since we went to VBulletin, right? What's the deal? I see an icon for inserting an image, and it starts with http. I thought there was a way you can upload an image here from your own computer. Is that not so?

2. What parameters are OK with images? Just JPGs? What size JPGs? For instance, what pixel horizontal vs. vertical are appropriate. I don't really want to make people scroll in a thread, so I'd like to know what the maximum size would be to prevent that. Poking around I don't see anything that helps me with this. I see no stickied thread in this sub forum, for example.

3. Do I need to upload my photos for insertion here to a hosting site?

4. Why do tool tips here in advanced editing only work sometimes? I'm using Firefox. It's annoying to float your cursor over an icon expecting a tool tip to appear and get nothing. 1/2 the time, that's what happens. :\

1 and 3 are the same question really; yes you do need to host them elsewhere.

2. it does not matter as there is a plugin that automatically shrinks the picture, then the viewers can click if they want to see it full size.

4. No idea, works fine for me.

Just to add to #2, while we have a dimension constriction plugin, it still requires downloading the whole picture. So if you're using embedded images, don't be a jerk. Keep them as small (in dimensions and file size) as you reasonably can.

I tried this yesterday and discovered the automatic dimension restriction (I don't recall installing a plugin, but it seemed to be there). One uploaded image was really too small to show what I wanted and I uploaded another that was bigger. There may be a sweet spot some times but it's hard to know what it is.

Again, tool tips for icons in the editing box here works a lot/most of the time but often doesn't for some reason, have no idea why. A second later, it will work, no idea what's at play there. Maybe slowdown in Firefox. I do get frequent delays, for instance key strokes appearing several seconds later sometimes. Maybe the tool tips problem is the same thing or related.

I never really noticed it till now but i have the same problem with FF 3.6.10
I'm not sure if it was happening before or not with other versions.

If i move my cursor from one icon to the next the tool tip may or may not appear. If i move my cursor from the text area to the icon the tool tip will appear.
