Wouldn't you know it, the week before Christmas my miniDV camcorder decides it likes to put bite marks into my miniDV tapes. So, while trying to collate all of my two-year old son's videos on to DVD for myself and my parents, the camcorder puts bite marks into his 2nd birthday tape and others and then refuses to read them!!!

If my camcorder had cajones, I'd kick it in them. Now I have to go out and buy a new camcorder so I can have something to record this Christmas on. I just hope those tapes are not permanently damaged and can be read by another miniDV camcorder.

Best Buy is having a no interest for 18 months sale on their camcorders so I may do that. I'm just really peeved because they had a 10% off coupon that expired yesterday and I couldn't make it to the store. There's another 10% off coupon but that is only for camcorders $449 and up and I'm not sure I want to pay that much.

Ok, venting done. Thanks.

Nope, it's over two years old. It's a Sharp camcorder and the closest authorized repair center is in Texas according to their website. If it weren't for the Christmas Crunch, I'd consider sending it in for repairs but I have got to have something for Christmas weekend with the family.

CCity had some clearance ones a few mo's back so I ended up with a Panasonic GS12 for pretty darn cheap (display model). I bought the extended warranty too for less than a new one would have cost. Anyway, check them out for some ok deals sometimes. Also, Costco has some MiniDV models for decent prices.

What brand / model do you have now that broke?

My Canon MV600 decided that it's sensor had had enough and so stopped picking anything up, now everyhting is just black. Of course this happened 6 months after the warrent ran out, fan-bloody-tastic.

It's a Sharp VL-WD255U. Not the greatest camcorder in the world but I got it for around $250 two plus years ago on sale with coupons. Just ticks me off that it decides to act up the week of Christmas.

I may have to check out Sam's as I don't have a membership to Costco. Maybe see if I can't find some clearance ones too. Just need to do it today or tomorrow so I can make these DVDs for the grandparents.

I went and picked up a Sony DC-HC40 miniDV camcorder during lunch at BestBuy. CircuitCity had it for $100 less than BB so I got BB to do a pricematch and take another $25 off. Put it on my BB credit card for 18 months no interest. Not the best deal I've ever gotten but not too bad in a crunch.

I had to put up with the annoying 'service plan' sales pitch though. Man, you'd think saying no three times would be enough. The guy also tried to insult my intelligence by saying stuff like, "Well, you know since this is a better camera it has more moving parts that will break down." Dude, it has no more moving parts than any other camcorder. It just has a better lens and more pixels than other camcorders.

That's why for expensive electronic items I usually splrge for the extra warranty. Got a new TV after 3.5 years before and had a DVD player get upgraded.
