Good morning everyone. I hope this is the right forum for this question. I bought the 80gb seagate harddrive and I want to know how to install it and then copy the files from my old drive into the new drive. Thanks in advance.

first you need to format it, do you know how to do that? also do you want to copy everything over, or only important documents?

I know how to format the drive when I first intalled my old one but don't know how to format the new drive with the old one installed.
I wanted to copy everything over to the new drive. Thanks.

Your Seagate HD probably came with some software that will do that for you, or you can download it for free at their web site. It will copy one partition to the new drive.

If you can get a copy of a program called Ghost. (available from Symantec/Norton), you can make an image file of your exact partition properties. Then, you just swap ouyt the old disk for the new, and re-ghost the image file back to the new drive. It doesn't take too long, but depending on the size of your current partition and the amount of data on it, it could take a little while. I used this program to setup my sister's hard drive when she got a 30GB drive a while ago, but at the time I didn't have my normal bootable 'ghost' disk with me. I downloaded a trial version, and then found that it wasn't full-featured,plus the image file was set so that it could only be read by that trial version. It was painful, but I got it running again with Ghost Explorer. If you do get a trial version to use, make sure you understand it's capabilities before hand. if you have any friends in the IT field, they can probably help you with Ghost as most comapnies tend to use it for their enterprise.

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and installed the new drive. Installing win98 right now. I'll ask our mis guys about ghost as I'll use my old drive in my bro's system. Thanks again.
Is it normal for the formatting to take too long?

The larger the hard drive the longer it takes, but sometimes there are utilities that will format the drive in the blink of an eye.

Formatting on these larger drives is gettingto be excruciatingly painfiuul to watch. In my system, I have an 18GB and a 12GB drive. The 12GB was my C: drive and the 18GB was my D: up until a few days ago. I finally decided to make the 18GB my primary drive, whcih meant I had to ghost both drives to an image file. After creating the ghost images, I had to move those images to my 12gb C drive. I then booted to a dos disk again and ghosted the primary image to the 18gb drive. After imaging, i moved the image for the 18GB D drive to the C;, switched jumpers to change master/slave on each, and then f-disked the 12 Gb drive so it stop being seen as an active partition. I then formatted it for good measure, and i about cried. It was only a 12GB drive and I was hating the time it took. Win 98 wants to check the drive, check it again, format it, then check it some more, go car shopping for a while, stop for a 3 hour lunch break, etc. Okay, maybe the drive doesn't REALLY go car shopping, but it seems like it.

Formatting a new drive sucks, but it's a necessary evil. Hope the rest of the install went well and good luck on getting everything else finished up.
