Okay, heres the deal. Often times, i try to play a song or movie, and all the sudden i get an error message, there is a red X by my volume meter, and no sound plays. After a while, the little volume indicators come back on and sound works.

The error message i usually get is "windows event log has stopped working." Sometimes i'll get a "DCHP client error." What i dont understand is why this happens. It seems to happen less often (or maybe not at all?) when the computer is on "high performance."

Things i think i can rule out are:

1)Its not a codec issue. i use sharks codecs (just 32bit, but ive tries 64bit and its messed up the same way). Ive tried removing them and no dice.

2)Its not a driver problem. The IDT drivers are what i use (from the dell downloads). Ive tried uninstalling, and still the same thing. Uninstalling/upgrading/reinstalling, etc, i still get the problem.

something interesting to note is that using the Dell control point software, the little volume increase/decrease indicators no longer come on after i get this error. the only thing i can think of is that its a vista 64 issue. i dont have any ideas how these unrelated errors affect my volume either.

ive tried asking on the Dell forum but no one seems to know whats wrong.

I'd really appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

Been using vista for months now, still hate it. All the warnings/error message all over. And the stupid window defender keep wanting update every single day. I want to kill both the agents and defender. So far they r nothing but annoying.

You realize there are options to turn all that off, right? You could have solved the issue in the length of time you took to make this post. I can understand taking a day or two to getting around to adjusting a setting, but you stated that you've been using the OS for months and yet you haven't bothered to disable UAC notifications and turn defender off? Yikes.

I never had this issue with my DELL Vista x86 laptop or Vista x64 on my PCs,have you tried a different sound driver maybe older one?..also update your DX9.0c to latest version (March 2009) link. .Sometimes Dell have BIOS updates that may be worth a shot too.

It honestly does sound like a driver issue to me. What is the model of your Dell? Its possible you can go to the manufacturer of your sound card, or integrated chip, see if they have more recent drivers. I know Realtek updates their drivers almost weekly.

The dell forums over at notebookreview.com say to dump the IDT drive and let vista install it's own audio driver.
