Insane intern attempts to get job with us. I have to call and tell him no.

The local community college has been harassing myself and my boss for some time now for us to accept a few interns working 11 hours a week so that they can get some real IT experience. It doesn't cost us anything so we said ok, plus I'm thinking for down the road it looks good on a resume to be part of a teaching program.

The other day however when our first intern came in he was completely insane. He told us he uses WFW 3.11 at home. And although the college professor told us this guy has experience with Linux Qmail and DNS he advised me that he had never really done anything with Linux but looked forward to figuring it out at work.

He admitted having problems in his brain, which do not allow him to look at any one thing for long periods of time.

I said does that include computer monitors and he said yes. Explaining that he gave up working on his computer at home and has taken up woodworking since football season began. Note than when asked about his computer experience he changed the subject back to woodworking...

At that point my boss says, come in on Monday and start, and I almost spew my soft drink out of my nose.

After the 'gentleman' leaves, I politely turn to my boss and say. WTF were you thinking. I'm not working with that loony.

He agrees with me but unfortunetly does not know what to do as he already told the guy to come in.

Thinking quickly I promptly pick up the phone calling his number and 'advise' his wife that things have changed and apologize about the internship not being offered giving her my bosses number if she has any more questions....

Kinda feel bad for the dude though cause I think he was injured in the gulf war, but there is NO WAY i'm letting that guy touch any of our servers, and I do not feel like babysitting that nutbag when i have work to do.

Call the school and talk to the person who sent him out there... they need an earful. Your company finally is nice enough to allow the school to send out some interns and they send HIM...??? That is pretty damn rude of them if you ask me.

I swear to god, the prof said this guy was really good with computers and one of his best students. i am seriously mortified to think of what his worst student would be like.

I think maybe the guy tortured the professor with his woodworking equipment until he relelnted and made the call. I am a complete idiot myself, I gamble, i carouse, i goto strip bars on a weekly basis... but I have enough sense to come off as a normal schmoe for any job interview. I'm thinking if this is the best this guy can do to impress us we are in some trouble when he actually shows up for work.

It surprised me at the end when you mentioned his wife and the Gulf War. The whole time I thought it was some dumb kid.

Me too. It's kind of sad what war can do to people. I'm sorry you got stuck in that situation. You feel bad doing it, but you got to do it because it just won't work out well.

It sounds like the school should be helping this guy get into a carpentry / woodworking program not IT.

Sadly, it could be political correctness run amok, everyone afraid to look "insensitive" by telling a handicapped person that he just isn't suited for some kinds of work. That and/or fear of being sued for emotional trauma.

Sometimes a person is just handicapped or disabled, not "differently abled" or "handi-capable."

I would have called the school and let them handle it. Would have felt bad either way though!
