Insane @home speed

I was trying out the bandwidth tester today and i got some very odd results. If I just run it, I get 954.6 kbps, but, if, in IE, I go into tools -> internet options -> Connections -> Lan settings and put in "http://proxy:8080" and use automatic configuration I get 2342 kbps. Now why is that? Is that a real world speed, or some glitch?
thanks,

Without a proxy, you are pulling the speed test data directly from the test source, as it is meant to be run. This is a closer measurement of your speed.

In the second test, with proxy turned on, you are pulling the data from the proxy server at your ISP, probably in your same town. This means you don't have to traverse the Interent to get it, just your cable and a few segments of the @home network. Obviously, this will be much higher performance. In general, actually, you will see improvements in speed when using their caching proxy.

This is actually a great post for me, as I use @home and didn't know they had caching proxies out there! I'll have to give it a shot!
