The Inquirer's 5.6 article

Dang, I figured this would be the lastest "Yeah, Right" thread going. Leaking news (remember, The Inquirer does not sign NDAs), they say 5.6 will be a huge improvement in many games, with LOMAC gaining 50% (not that I play it).

Just so expectations are set, expect to see ATI, nVidia, and The Inquirer trashed in this thread. ;)

I love seeing people bash the inquirer. Then when they prove to be right, people just say it was a stroke of luck :p

Doom 3 will work almost twenty per cent faster than with Catalyst 5.5 as ATI made more efficient use of memory.
That could basically wipe out nVidia's game performance advantage.

I call BS right now.

They "have a feeling" it will be released on June 7 !?! Wtf is that. That whole article is BS.

Oh yeah, and I hope this is true. Extra performance is always nice (as long as IQ is not compromised).

i'm not holding my breath or anything (remember how often we heard "next Catalyst version will feature totally re-written OpenGL driver!") but the timing does seem a little more appropriate than the last time(s) we heard that announcement.

i.e. *if* ATI only decided to start re-writing the OpenGL ICD completely in August 2004 (after preliminary Doom3 benchmarks were released) then it would *probably* take this long to have a finished product. of course, i don't know anything specific about the development cycle of OpenGL ICD's, so it's just a wild guess. 8 months seems reasonable...

(last time, people were saying the super Opengl driver would be in cat 4.10, which was only 2 months after Doom3 -- that seemed a little too quick to re-write a whole driver)

EDIT: ok, I just *guessed* it was the mysterious "re-written OpenGL driver", but that doesn't seem to be the case, after reading the article completely.

damn...thats true. I shouldn't get my hopes all high that my 9800 will get those nice performance increases..if that article is true anyways.

we have to wait and see how much of that article really holds true....as we all know the inquirer has been known to feed us crap and change it at the very end.

If this is true Nvidia will have to do something similar.... Also inthis times that AMR and new gen cards are close I don't think they are spending their time in "old" cards... But that's just IMO. It would be nice if they can manage it, but if so I hope Nvidia can do the same LOL

Heh, LOMAC. I think I still have the CD somewhere. Should try it and see. It ran like a pig when it first came out, and this was probably on a 9800Pro.

This makes me think G70 will be launched around then, and ATI is aiming a small wrench at the marketing machinery. Good news either way (new card or better performance with old cards).

I'm with phreek. 15-20% performance improvements?

From a driver release?

Sure. Whatever.

I'll be laughing when this one launches.

the 10% or 15% improvement might be only in one particular game at one particular resolution on some particular card....its impossible to gain that much performance increase just with a driver release.

:(

Anyway, havent Nvidia produced a 15-20% overall improvement with a simple driver release?

I cant see why it cant happen but it does seem a bit high.
