I have this situation on my hands ...bah. Kinda upsetting situation at that...
I have reason to believe that someone might have gotten access to tax records I have on my computer due to my leaving a file sharing program on for a few minutes. (last time I'll ever do that!)
For some reason the program defaulted my entire personal hard drive and there is lots of sensitive data on there.
...either which way I'm about 75% sure that nobody has gotten access to the data or any of my other personal and confidential data... The tax records even have my bank account # (for direct deposit). However, I generally monitor the data that was transfered in both directions and I can't recall really being online too long or having seen a transfer of anything unusual (maybe just some pr0n if ya know what I mean ). Other than that, I don't recall any strange outbound transfers...
Either which way, I'm young and don't want my credit ruined, especially since I just started building it.
I've been seriously considering doing the following, and I'd like to hear what others of you have to say:
(1)Signing up for Equifax's Credit Monitoring Service ($5 a month)...anybody ever use this before? Seems like a good tool in a situation like mine.
(2)Calling the major credit bureaus and having them put a flag on my account. Does anybody know if I can remove the flag whenver I want? Or is it something that has to stay on for a long time?
(3)Changing my bank account number. Since my bank account # was on the form, I'm not sure I want to keep it the same...
If anybody stole the information it was very recently...I can't imagine it being more than a week ago (as I very rarely use file sharing programs like Direct Connect).
Has anybody dealt with this kind of thing? Should I do any of the things on the list? Should I wait or make a move now even though it might be premature?
Input would be GREATLY appreciated...
