Input on purchase of new gaming/entertainment notebook

Just gonna make it really simple. I want to spend under 2k.

I can either purchase a refurbished Dell m1730, if you check them out at the dell outlet you'll see their priced pretty competitivly.

Or

Buy an alienware with a student discount. I've been looking at the M15x but the M9750 churns out almost equal performance as the m1730 and I prefer its 17' in. screen.

Just looking for some input. If you guys know other laptops that are around these prices for the same performance let me know. I love student discounts 🙂

no I plan on this staying in my dorm. I have an Asus EEE as my road warrior. The only lugging I'll do for this is to a movie night or LAN party.

Go for a Sager. Cheaper then the latter, better build quality, and better performance.

Right now the Gateway gaming laptops have everything beat on value. They have a 8800M GTS 512MB and a 1440 X 900 or 1920 X 1200 screen, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD for under $2K, and if you chat with a Gateway rep for the sale they'll usually give 20% off retail price.

Yup, I got the Gateway P-6831FX from Best Buy for $1200 with a free game (I think that sale ended, it's likely $1350 now). My only complaint is that the CPU isn't that amazing (1.66ghz Core 2 Duo). Thankfully, it's apparently easy to upgrade.

Or, you can just order a similar model off of Gateway's website...they're priced really well, and you can pick the components you want (though the 8800M GTS is standard, I believe).

I'm very satisfied with my laptop. 🙂
