Hey all,

Been sniffing around for pieces of information concerning to upgrade my rig a bit. Then I thought I’d post this to the forum to get more opinions in the hopes of deciding to go one way or another.

English is not my native tongue so I don’t mind being gramatically corrected as well :)

A bit of context below.

***

Rig: i5 4590, Asrock b85 pro4, Corsair 600w+ bronze, Corsair 2x4GB low prof CL9, Crucial mx100 256GB, Gigabyte GTX 760 2GB OC, Win10.

Budget Range: 700-1000eur

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming (MMOs, Hearthstone, no FPS or action), editing photos (raw files in Lightroom), browsing.

Are you buying a monitor: No, have Dell IPS 27’

Parts to Upgrade: GPU or CPU

Do you need to buy OS: No

Location: Northern Europe

Parts Preferences: Intel, Nvidia

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1440p

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: feel FPS drop significantly in crowded MMO cities when upgraded from 1080p to 1440p, also cannot run Ultra settings smoothly when on 1440p.

Gave up another hobby so have extra cash to put into the PC.

Comments: stability comes in front as well — I don’t want to OC or play around with settings too much, would rather pay more for solid and compatble parts.

Given the above I was considering the following options, what do you think?

A. I was waiting for GTX 2080 + PSU when it comes out later this year / early next. But when then I started thinking, should I upgrade CPU while waiting?

B. Keep current mobo, RAM and get i7 4790K into 1150, should fit perfectly. Although I would need to update my BIOS for the CPU to work at all.

C. Other alternatives? :) I start liking B + A combo tho...

Thank you for the input :)

Upgrade the video card. I game at 256x1600 and at first I was using about the same GPU as you were. Two years ago I upgrade to a GTX 970 and I notice a big improvement in performance.

Sounds like the GTX 1060 is what you need.

Would a gtx 1080 or the successor bottleneck my rig?
Other than possibly being an overkill...?

Was willing this time to throw in some cash for something better than a mid-range video card

a 1080 is a good choice if you can afford one. Oh i double checked your specs again, you will want to upgrade the memory to 16GB as well.

Got it!
So to put your recommendation into money, additional pair of Corsairs 4gbx2 would cost me 70eur, and as for 1080, they start at 600-700eur here. I bet another PSU would also be needed too.

But I see you don’t pick on the CPU then :)

Appreciate your input, thanks!

Your CPU is fine right now. And so should your PSU be as well. Even a 1060 will give you better performance or the 1070.
