Input on a motherboard for a dual-core Core2... later Penryn-based quad-core cpu?

What's the very latest info on the best motherboard for a Core2 build? The user will want the option to use NVidia SLI, so that might limit us to 680i boards. I will be considering reviews, but maybe there are some newer bios or board hardware revisions that have tipped the scales toward a particular board model. Cost is not a consideration. We plan to build with, and overclock, a low-to-mid-range dual-core CPU now, then plan to progress to a quad-core Penryn-based cpu when they become available at or around the end of this year, provided those future CPUs will be compatible.
