I am planning to approach a local real estate company with the intent of offering my services to maintain and update their web page. The have a decent web page with info about the realtors and links to all of the homes they are listing. They list and sell a lot of homes in my community. I am a full time software developer already. This is more something I would like to do part time. I am not realy interested in being an employee of thiers but would rather be a contractor focusing on web page maintainance. I am just not sure on a price. Should I charge a flat rate per month to update the page or should it be based on hourly? Per listing? How much? Your thoughts? Thanks....

Just some thoughts...

If they have a decent page already, wouldn't you think someone's already taking care of it? Instead of pushing just site maintenance, you should think about what you can add to the site to make them want to use you.

If they do a lot of business, won't the site need constant updating? They won't want you to be an employee either, don't worry about that.

Your pitch would probably be more appealing if you make it a flat rate, so they know the costs are fixed. But the work won't be evenly spread out through the year, it's busier in the summer. How are you going to handle things when you're on vacation?

Just from my stand point I wouldn't go flat monthly fee as you might get screwed with lots of work one month and a little the next plus with a set fee if you do have a slow month they might not like paying a bunch of money if they don't have much work for you.

I would ask to get paid by the hour, that way you both win.
