Input from FX60 owners

I'm looking into getting one during the summer, anyone with one, can you tell me how it is and if it's worth it if you have a huge budget to spend on a computer ($4000), thanks.

IMO, the FX series chips are a waste of money. For about half the price, you could get an Opteron 170 and overclock it past FX60 speeds.

But that said, if I had the money, right now, I'd probably get one.

Don't forget, Conroe will be released as early as July, which could mean up to a 40% increase in performance over an FX60 @ 2.8GHz. It's always hard to pick out hardware in advanced because things are released so often.

They have unlocked multiplyers though, I looked into phase change cooling, but dropping a grand on cooling is a little extreme imo.

I know they have unlocked multipliers, but the limitation on the core itself will only allow for maybe 3GHz if you get a good chip, which is obviously no gaurantee.

Spend $500 on an Opteron and invest/save the rest.

I doubt top dog of anything will ever be priced on the cheap. Why should they if they can sell all they can make at a higher price?

Big time edit:

The multitasking crowd may be better off as well as the video editing crowd with an Opteron, but the gaming crowd still does better (price not withstanding) with the FX chips.

What are you smoking? They're the same chips. If you absolutely have to have 1MB cache, get a 4400+ or 4800+, otherwise, grab a 4200+ or 3800+ and overclock it, you're not going to notice the cache difference in most situations.

Exactly. iirc, FX60s have the coldbug. If you're serious about spending $1k on a chip, I'd suggest getting an Opteron 170 and a good water-cooling setup for half the price. With the right stepping you can easily get 3ghz. You can even buy them pre-tested if you look on some FS/FT forums. 3ghz = FX-64 😀

ok, so this is the choices, get a cheaper cpu like an X2 and try overclocking it and get SLI with it, or get an FX-60/opteron and try overclocking with a single gpu, keep in mind I want to game heavily with this system, thanks.

Well, it depends on how much work you want to do. If you just want a stock chip with a standard heatsink/fan cooling system and have money to blow, buy an FX60 or an X2 4800+. If you're going to overclock, you might as well go with an Opteron instead since you can hit FX60+ speeds if you get the right chip. I'm sure you can find someone who is willing to sell you their 3ghz-OC'd Opteron for $500, which is still half the price of an FX60 but with better performance. I was going to go with an X2 4800+ before, but after a LOT of research I decided to go with an Opteron 165 and put the excess money in other places like a great video card and backup system.
