So I've run into some spare hardware laying around and I'd like try it some stuff for a soho. At work we use vmware and some 2k8 hyperv but I'd like to try some things with dynamimps on my own, mess with kvm or virtualbox and play with nested vms cause I've never used those. My curiosity has me searching for speed, efficient computing, keeping power down, easy fast backups/restore, and of course learning.

Specs AMD x6 1045t OC to 3.2
600 watt PS
32gb ram at 1600mhz
areca 1220 raid controller - 4 500gb drives
2 7200rpm laptop drives
cheapo nas with 2tb of space

Currently I'm running

2 7200rpm laptop drives in raid 1 config as my system drive (I may just run non raid since my c: drive almost never changes. Then just clone the system drive once a weekend using something like clonezilla or ghost. It'll keep my power down since this runs almost 24/7

Main question revolves around my data partition and what to do with my 4 drives on the raid controller. I previously was running raid 10 then for space reasons went to raid 5 which wasn't very fast with my drives. I'm currently running 2 drives raid 0 and another 2 drives in raid 0. Each raid set currently has 8 vms on it each. They run quite nice and fast. No SQL on the machines. What would you suggest for my raid setup and stripe size?

My backups are run at 9pm to a cheapo NAS from newegg, I may pull out the drives and run freenas (I've heard good things). If you want me to test anything out lmk I enjoy the tinkering. Any input is appreciated.
