last year MSI debuted GUS which was intended to be an external gpu adapter for laptop. it was supposed to support up to an hd 5670. buit never made it to n. america
today at CES MSI is back with a revision on GUS. it supports a gpu with a tdp for 150w or lower. and requires the used of thunderbolt for proper connectivity

If i am getting this correctly, this device can enable a user like for example a buddy of mine who purchased a i7 lappy recently with only hd3000 to enjoy some 150tdp goodness without replacing the lap top?

It requires Thunderbolt, so as long as the laptop has that port (is Apple the only one who currently supports it or have other laptops added Thunderbolt support?), it should work.

These external PCI-E 16x boxes are pretty cool. A lot pricier than just building a desktop with a midrange video card, but still really neat if you want to game at home on a laptop.

Yeah there are a few thunderbolt hubs with different purposes coming to market. Exciting times, I hope to get a Thudnerbolt enabled laptop/Ultrabook for my mother.

I just need an add-on card for my desktop now.

For someone looking for a single computer solution who wants a portable laptop and still wants to game, this would be a great solution. Quad core Ivy Bridge in an ultraportable with a mSATA boot drive and a 2.5" hdd, coupled to a 7870 and 24" display with a wireless keyboard and mouse would be a great system for those who don't want to deal with syncing files or running two computers.
