Inline skating or something else to travel far with less effort?

How hard is it to learn inline skating? Looks fun as heck. Is it indeed fun? Anything better to travel pretty far with less effort? I'm talking fast walking speed, or a little faster, NOT bike, motercycle or car speed lol.

Thanks!!!

If you've never skated before might be pretty rough to learn, if you know how to ice skate it's pretty much the same thing. If you do learn it's a lot faster than walking or running, not quite bike speed (although you can get going that fast with hills). I skate to workout, bought some fancy speed skates a couple months ago and I can really fly in those.

Thanks, and I appreciate you not being a troll! So, what if one knows how to roller skate from back in the day - is learning how to inline skate that much different, or I would definitely have a leg up? Thanks!

Roads are too inconsistent and rough to inline skate everywhere. We're big time hockey players in my household and roller skating on anything other than tennis courts and smooth asphalt is the suck. There is no give to the outdoor wheels as you'd imagine.

As for learning, if you have a grasp of how to balance already, you'll be fine. My kids learned skiing the first try. The trouble (and danger) is the stopping part. You'll have to practice and commit into leaning back against a hard turn.

My opinion, use a bike to get places instead. Roads are a lot clearer now since the lockdowns.

I really, really dislike strapping things to my feet. I could probably learn to inline skate, but I'm getting too old to start getting cuts and bruises all of the time.

My choice would be an old style scooter - basically an anorexic skate board, with a handle attached.. Those are no picnic either and if you're not paying attention, you can still get the hated road rash

If you know how to roller skate you should be fine I'd think, I think inline skates feel a little less stable but it's the same motions to get going. I'll agree with rh71 though, riding on roads is kinda shitty on skates but if you have a bike path or something to ride on those should be fine.

If you know how to roller skate then you'll be fine. I roller skated when I was a kid and then tried inline skating for the first time in college. I picked it up real quick.

Skating sucks as transport if the roads/widewalks aren't very smooth. Asphalt usually is rough enough to be annoying. Around me we get enough frost heave that you have to screw up you rhythm all the time to step over joints. I mean it can be done. Back in college I used them to transit relatively large distances, but you'll probably be frustrated with the issues small wheels bring. There are some large wheel skates, but they can be $$$.

Yeah I've been getting bigger and bigger wheels on my skates, it's crazy how much faster you can go going up 10mm or so. My older skates are hockey ones, but I put 85mm wheels on it and I was able to get going a lot faster. I have speed skating type ones that a got a few months ago that are 110mm I think, those things are huge. First skates cost me $170 and the other ones were around $400 on sale (and those are the cheapest ones they make) so the price does go up quite a bit, but the boots are far more comfortable.

Wrist guards so you don't break one

VERY good advice on the wrist guards!

I know 3 people who have badly broken a wrist/fore-arm blading/skating, one of whom literally shattered both hands and wrists on her first ride along with ripping/grinding off a substantial amount of flesh! It was over a year (and multiple surgeries) before she was able to function normally no exaggeration.

And blades/skates can be a pain to use for getting around because most of them are attached to your feet in a way that is annoying to take on and off frequently. This is why back in the day when not riding bikes we preferred skate-boards to blades/skates when out doing things.

Modify inline skates so they are motorized. Drone motors and an ebike battery pack should do.

Actually... that sounds like it would be kind of fun. You could divert regenerative braking power into a vape so you take a puff every time you stop.
