I frequenly play roller hockey, at least 3 times a month, can be as much as 10 times a month during the spring/summer seasons. I have ABEC-7 bearings (forgot the brand) and I don't think I can open the shield. Either that or I don't know how.

I know they sell cleaners and lubes at the store, but they seem a bit pricey for what they are. I'm looking at stuff house-hold product alternatives, i.e. paint thinner, motor oil, WD-40 etc. that would be good for cleaning and lubricating my bearings. I've seen lots of different recommendations on the Internet but does anyone have any products they swear on?

Outside of the hockey season, I play in a gym which can get really dusty, a lot more so than a rink. So that's why I feel I should do some bearing cleaning.

toothpicks work well for the dust in the bearings, other than that, just use some compressed air. You should be fine with that.
