Inkjet vs Laser??? Cost per page!

A few years ago when i purchased my Laser printer, it was clearly a better choice as it was fast and efficient and clearly had a lower cost per page.

But now in 05 the inkjets are quicker, and their replacement cartridges seem to have come down enormously.

Does the cost per page for text printing from an inkjet now compare with a laser printer?

For black & white, a laser is cheaper to run. But for colour, good quality injets are usually cheaper to run than normal colour lasers. So if you plan on printing in colour, you will be better off buying an injet, unless you print 100pages/day, and can afford $1500 for a good colour laser.

BtW: If your intersted in buying a new printer, the Canon PIXMA iP5000 is awesome. It costs a bit to buy, but its cheap to run (has 5 ink tanks), quiet and fast. It also has some cool features, like being able to print onto CDs, borderless photo printing, and being able to auto-duplex (can print on both sides of a piece of paper).

Hi RoD,

I am actually considering the Canon MP780 which uses the Pixma IP4000 mechanism.

Currently i have an old (but perfect) HP720C and a Brother MFC-6650MC Laser (still going strong) We have a Home Office set up, but we are keen on the CDR/DVD printing, built in scanner and Dupplex printing on the MP780.

Oh, ok. Well, the iP4000 is almost the same as the iP5000, so that MFC could be the best option for you.

One really cool feature with the printer is that it has a quiet mode, which you can tell it to use at certain times. So my printer will print quietly (but slower) after 9pm and before 7am. How cool is that!

That is cool!

Unfortunately i dont think i can hook it up to my router to use across the network.
Im debating whether its worthwhile keeping the Brother MFC-6650 at all since the MP780 will have duplex printing.

Any idea if 4picolitre or 2picolitre will bear any difference when printing on CD-R's and DVD's?

Dunno for sure, but the surface on the CD/DVD probably isn't high enough quality to notice the difference.

As for keeping the brother, it's up to you. I suppose it depends exactly what you plan to do with them.
