😀 WOW! Thanks for all the great info guys.

😉 Well Macro2 you'll be pleased to hear I've looked a LOT for info and reviews of Canon S750, and it truly is great. Cheap consumables (even without refilling), VERY fast, great quality of both TEXT and PHOTOS ... with HP and Epson you always have to make a compromise with one or the other of those. Okay the price tag is £50ish more, but if I were to buy a HP 940 (let alone 960) and buy 1 colour & 1 black cart it would cost me £150 anyway! Since the HP integrrate the all important print heads on to the carts this makes buying a compat cart far less favourable unlike the sophisticated ink pots that the Epson and Canon printers use, therefore both Epson & Canon become even cheaper to run. I've seen reviews from 3 very reliable resources and they all say the S750 is GREAT, expensive to buy but well worth it for speed, quality, running costs and overall perf. The S300 is meant to give near enough the same quality as the S750 but the running costs are higher and the print speed slower. I also had a good look at the new HP DJ5550 and PhotoRetIV, but I have to say overall I think Canon will serve me better ... I'm definitely leaning towards the CANON S750 at the mo 😉

😱 zephyrprime even if Epson do come out with the new 2pl technology and they'd have to make the things available to buy within the next 2 weeks and within my budget for it to be of any use to me, even then I couldn't wait for the branded inks to become widely available (hence cheaper) or the even longer wait for the compats to arrive on the scene. I wouldn't even consider the brand new range of HP (eg 5550) or Epson (C62 etc) for this same reason. I really want something I can read reviews of, find consumer opinion on and calculate some running/ink costs.

😱 NesuD I have thought very carefully about the C70 and C80 Epson printers but I'd prefer the Epson Photo 810 all things considered, esp running costs and photo output, not to mention purchase price.

🙁 Batti regarding my Epson SC640 it is relatively quiet printing but hideously noisy feeding paper through, not good with my tiny children sleeping in the next room! From what I hear this is something Epson still haven't adressed, along with that horrible (but fast) draft mode they use.

😀 Thanks for the offer Homebrew, that's very kind. I'll have to see what I eventually decide on but the Canon S750 really seems VERY much what I want, photo is the most important but I'd rather avoid the Epsons text, true speed and noisy feeding mechanism, plus I really dislike Epson's lack of WinXP drivers, in fact I have a load of probs because I lost (well borrowed and never got back) my Epson SC640 CD and the downloadable drivers really don't seem to work, esp on my Win98SE partn of my dual boot.

🙂 TimeKeeper LOL! The Lexmarks often don't come with any ink over here, if they do the carts aren't even half full, and at the amount of ink Lexmark put in there that only lasts about 4 pages (5% coverage). As you say they are disposable, plus the printer is cheaper than the carts 😉

😀 lnguyen thanks for that great link, I'll check it out ASAP.

Once again thank you all so much for your help, I still haven't made my mind up 100% yet, so keep those experiences and advice rolling in 😉

Cartridges on E-bay as low as $1.99. BCI-3enull

😉 Thanks Macro2, £127 is amazing! Ever bought from PixelPrice.com? I usually use www.dabs.com or www.komplett.co.uk although other UKers have recommended www.kustompcs.co.uk, www.aria.co.uk and www.scan.co.uk too.

😱 I'm a little uncertain of PixelPrice because they handle only Euros (?), plus if they aren't UK based, import taxes and RMA 'ing could be a problem too. They say P&P (shipping) is usually within 5 days and costs ?7 (£4.50) or free if you order 5 items (unusual not to do it by weight or cost).

EDIT:

😱 Just got some info on the latest Epsons, not that I'd go for anything 'latest' for the reasons I've already stipulated. Anyway the new Epson C62 is not 2880x720dpi as I thought, but 5760dpi! Well 5760x720dpi or should I say LINES per inch LOL! I'm very disappointed as I can get 1440dpi certified coated paper very cheap and the thought of dropping a 5760x720 to 1440x720 is pretty numbing, surely 2880x1440 would have been a much better idea, but then Epson always did enjoy promoting horiz over vert didn't they! Also the true Epson carts are 12+16=£28 ($20), but of course it will take a while to find the true running costs, like how much ink is in there, how efficiently it is used and how damn long people will have to wait this time to get the half price compat carts?

😀 Definitely still between:

Epson Photo 810 £87 2880x720 (compats make actual running costs equiv to HP, let down by text)
HP 940C £88 2400x1200 (just a slower version of HP960? Let down by speed and slightly poorer photo quality)
HP 960C £116 2400x1200 (Very good from what I've read but still slightly poorer photo quality)
Canon S750 £127 (£150 from same source as other prices) 2400x1200 (very cheap to run, by far the fastest and no compromises either)

Austin,
No way I'd buy a HP again. I even have a couple you can have cheap. LOL
A S750 runs circles around a 940 or 960.

😉 LOL! Yeah I think the Canon S750 is certainly looking very good ... but then just how cheap would we be talking for a HP? It is a 2400x1200 PhotoRetIII right? No don't tempt me, plus the P&P (shipping) would probably cost a fortune anyway!

I just had a Canon S820D and returned it for an HP 1315.......... I really like the HP better.

I only wish they would go to the 6 tank system....

But you get the 2.5 inch LCD.... you get 3 slots for all of you media.... nice !!! 🙂

HP's 1315

My 2 cents

A S750 runs circles around a 940 or 960.
How does it run circles around a 960? In what way? Speed? Quality? Noise?

I have a 960 and I'm curious. The quality seems pretty good - comparable to what I've seen on other printers, anyway. My 960 is fast enough for me and it's very quiet.

The cartridge cost thing is a good point, but I have been using the large tank sized catridges and I seem to get a lot of pictures for the money. I have only had to buy 2 of these so far and I've been a photo album or two's worth of pictures. I have never tried refilling them though. It sounds like you print more stuff than I do, Macro, but I am still curious by what you mean by "run circles" - that statement implies that there is much more to it than a difference in cartridge costs.

Well since the eye can't see drops smaller than 4-5 picoliter there isn't much reason in doing that 😛[/quote]

And the eye can't see more then 30 fps either 😛

How does it run circles around a 960? In what way?

Speed...S750
Cost of Ink S750 by far
Quality is close but I still like the S750 better definition on things such as grass.
S750 prints edge to edge the 960 does not.

The 960 is built like a tank. I have seen continuous feed systems hooked to them if you do major printing.

HP has also discontinued them in favor of units with less ink. Pathetic..17 ml, black and 17 ml color.

If your gonna stay with HP stick with what you have.

Mac

If you are not changing cartridges often you'll be OK with the 960.

😉 From what I've read about the S750, esp from reliable reviews it certainly seems as though it offers as good text quality as HP960 but more importantly to me the S750 offers better photo reproduction. But we're not only talking quality here but a significant amount of speed and reduction in running costs. If I had a HP940 or 960 already I wouldn't be bothered about changing personally, they are great printers, but from what I've read the Canon S750 is the better choice, certainly for me!
