Inkjet printer recommendations

Looking to get a new inkjet printer, my trust hp 722c is giving me problems, was wondering whats good these days. I like the hp design --it stores the paper under the output tray, how come other manufactuers dont do this also, seems like a waste of space to have a top feed tray and no paper output tray.

I'm looking to print mostly black and white, i hardly ever print color photos, maybe once every 6 mos, need something that can do labels and envelopes too. Speed of printer isnt a concern, print quality is.

Was considering a laserjet, but the toner costs seem expensive.

thanks

Consider a Canon. If you do very little color printing, an S300, S330photo or i320 serves you well. Thanks to their straight paper path, they print labels and envelopes as well. Ink isn't costly, because you just buy the ink, the print head is detached from them. It's a semi-permanent bubblejet head, by far not as expensive as Epson's piezo technology - and not as fragile either.

If you look into more color printing, you might want to think about stepping up to the 500 series for all-separate inks, one cartridge per color.

Stay away from Lexmark. They make okay printers but the replacement cartridges are way too expensive IMHO.

I don't have any scientific tests, but I estimate that laser printer toner runs about $0.02 a page. I doubt an ink jet can claim the same cost. A toner cartridge is not cheap, but you get thousands of pages (At least 2500 if not 3000) per cartridge. Your lucky to get 400 from a ink cartridge.

Yea, I agree...for your needs go Laser! Price per page is .02 on a laser compared to Ink Jets .03 to .04 per page. I have the Samsung 1210 Laser and it does 15p per min! Cartridges cost like $65 but yields me about 3300 pages with Toner saver button on...I tested this feature too and can't see any difference in the print quality or darkness with Toner feature turned on, otherwise with it off the cartrige yields about 2500, but I keep it on all the time. The foot print is amazingly small too! It sells for about $180sh I think but you can get it lower AND check the box too, it usually comes with 2 print cartridges at that price! I have had it for 6 months now and it prints and runs as well as my HP 1200 laser which cost me $400, although the HP has better overall graphic BW photo output but not by much. If you really don't need a laser, then I just saw a post about the HP 940 Inkjet going on sale for $49 bucks at Compusa I think soon, the thread was in Hot deals here on Ana or over in FW. I have the HP940 and it prints photo quality and is pretty fast too. For the Samsung, Try your Local SamsClub or Go Online at Amazon.

Printing costs on most seem pretty crazy. I still have my trust hp 722 here which works great, I just use the econofast mode (they say 50% less ink) for most stuff and it looks fine. If it ever went out I'd probably go bw laser and maybe a cheap (around $30) inkjet for that "rare" must be in color print.

Yea, for economy printing over the long run, laser is the way to go.

I recently got the Samsung ML-1430 (which replaced the 1210) and am very pleased with it.

Here's one link.

Buy a laser. In the long run, it's seriously cheaper.

I bought a Xerox desktop laser with toner three years ago. It is still on that toner cartidge. I expect it to keep going for some time -- maybe two or three more years.
