Someone told me that you cant refill ink cartridges for the new hp deskjet printers in that some hp models have special chips that detect when ink is run out and cant be refilled.

I'm looking to get a new printer down the road, my 3-year old 722c is dying out on me and want and other deskjet, maybe the 5550 model. I cant get any other brands becuase of a space limitation, the deskjet i have now fits in a corner with shelf over it for a phone and scanner. All other printers you have to feed in from the top, that top part wont work for me, the deskjet you feed in from the tray like a laser printer.

Anyway, after all this babbling, has anyone had any problems trying to refill the new deskjet printers, i know the 5550 model comes uses 3 seperate ink cartridges, and around here there about $35 each.

Thanks!

From what I read, it is Epson that's starting to put chips in their cartridges to avoid refilling.

Models aimed: EPSON Stylus Color C42UX, C62, C80 , C80n, C 82, C80wn, Epson Stylus Photo 785epx,810,820,890,925,960,1270,1280,2000P,2200.

HP carts do not have chips to prevent refills like Epsons do.

Some HP carts do have a chip with a serial # on it however. (45 black and 78 color carts do) The printer uses this only to count pages for ink level estimation. (printers that use the chip serial # estimate ink levels based on page counts. the printer remembers the serial # of the cart and simply attaches a page count to it, thats why the estimated ink levels stick no matter how many times you take out the cart and re-insert it.)

When you refill, the printer will still think its low, or out. HP printers will continue to print no matter what the estimated ink level is however. Making the printer forget the cart's serial # (so it shows 100% ink) is quite easy, you only require a piece of tape :D

As for refills I've always had good luck with the kits from MIS Associates. (http://www.inksupply.com) The ink they supply is ink made to match HPs original inks (NEVER use a "Universal" refill kik!!!!!) Once you get the kit everything in it is reusable. If you want more ink you purchase addtional bottles from them. Most HP carts need to be filled with a syringe, except black carts, they can be refilled through the print head on the cartridge, MIS provides a tool to do this as well. Using the syringe on color carts is fairly easy. Insert syringe into hole, push until you hit bottom, pull up a little and slowly inject. Put back in printer and your done :D

The kits include everything required to refill your particular cartridge. If you goto their website they have instructions posted on how to refill the carts, and the ink level reset procedure as well.
