I use a brake/parts cleaner to clean off my CPU. Dries leaving no residue and contains no grease.

Use some high purity isopropyl alcohol with a cotton ball.

Actually, I've just used Dawn dish detergent with some warm water and a soft sponge and that works too. Many people actually recommend this method.

yeah, dish soap works well, but so does rubing alcohol. Either way is fine. Just be sure the CPU is dry before putting the system back together.

One thing I've found that works shockingly well is something called Goo Gone. I was using it when I was rebuilding my brother's system a couple months ago and didn't have anything else to remove the old paste, and it eats right through it. Just be careful not to get it on your clothes, as it will leave an oily residue.

Oh, and to try to be helpful and such... Rubbing alcohol, and lighter fluid for whatever the alcohol won't take off.

You can take a credit card or something like it and CAREFULLY scrape the remnants of the pad off the chip after youve put some high concentration alcohol on it. Then use a lint free cloth (lens cloth) to clean it good.

Any brand will do as long as it is grease free. The one I have on my shelf right now is from Next Dimension, I think I got it from Advanced Auto Parts.
