Hello guys and girls,

I got an infraction for a post I made against someone. I'm not going go into the specifics of why I got the infraction - can infractions be viewed on your public profile???

Anyway, the reason for this thread is that I have an infraction against me dated 1/17/2010, yet although it has 0 points, it expires on 1/17/2011.

Is it usual for an infraction to last for a year?

It was my first misdemeanour of significant note and it seems a little harsh that the infraction is going to last for a year (I read in some other post that the default for infractions is 10 days) .

I know, call the Waaaaaaaaaaaaambulance :D

There is a long discussion of infractions here and it essenitally tellls you they mean nothing at the moment: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2028495&highlight=infraction

So now you will probably get another one for not searching. :D

Cool, do points mean prizes? :D

The thread you linked to was the one that I was alluding to in the OP.

DrPizza explains it clearly here:

It's not a vB default. We had to set up the infractions & the duration that they remain on a record. There's a handful of common infractions that have been set up, such as not having an email address displayed in the FS/T forum. Generally, members correct that problem right away, so there's not much point in worrying about it more than 10 days later. The rest of that handful have also been set at 10 days - I believe that number was just arbitrarily chosen. But the infraction titles that were set up don't address all of the reasons that a member may receive an infraction. We also have to enter custom infractions (which seems more often than not for me.)

In the future, we can set the vB software up to automatically vacation someone for a certain number of accumulated points. Perhaps I've gone a little rogue in doing so, but when I have to enter custom infractions for offenses that when a user repeats them will generally end up with a vacation - I set the expiration date quite a bit later - I've been going with 1 year. i.e. if you're blatantly trolling in the forums, I don't think you should expect that the "infraction" expires in 10 days and that 10 days later, you're free to repeat the same offense.

I'm sure that in the coming weeks, or months, as we get closer to using infractions to result in vacations, the moderators will be discussing this in much more detail. Til then, don't worry about it. For now, the 365 days (vs. 10 days) is me trying to send a more clear message that what you may have done to earn the infraction shouldn't be taken lightly. Without looking back through the records, I believe that in several of those 365 cases, I also pointed out that the user was very lucky that he hadn't just received a vacation. Had we still been with the Fusetalk software, I'm pretty sure that most of them would have had their posting priviledges suspended for a period of time.

I guess that I'm one of the lucky ones.
