Hi,
I am planning on buying a used SUV, and I have narrowed my search results on a 2008 Land Rover Range Rover, 2008 Mercedes GL 450, BMW X3/X5. I would like to know how expensive these cars would cost for maintenance, some of the common problems on these vehicles and if you would recommend getting these vehicles. This will be my first with all of these companies, BMW, Land Rover, and Mercedes. Do you recommend me getting one of these or should I stick with Japanese vehicles for cheaper maintenance.
Thank you.

If maintenance costs are a concern, look at a Lexus GX470/460.

Exactly. You shouldn't be asking those questions if you're considering a European SUV.

The CFO of my company has a GL450, not sure what year but it isn't as old as the one you're considering, and it broke down on him recently. Cost him ten grand to fix it. He also has a 2015 S550. Pretty sure that's still under warranty though.

I would expect the Range Rover to be even worse and I find it difficult to believe anyone would cross shop a Range Rover and a BMW X3.

I'd go with the Lexus GX JLee recommended quite frankly if reliability is important to you. It is way more capable and superior in every way to the X3. The X5 is a great SUV if off road driving and towing aren't a concern. If they are important, the GX is better.

If maintenance is a concern don't get a euro. My BMW is a '07 now and every time it's in the shop it's at least 1k...

Just normal stuff, water pump, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket. Each one was almost 1k. Headlights is acting up now that's another 900, and my tpms died again in one of the rims...
