Long story short, as a teen I was very into PC hardware. However I have been out of the PC hardware game for a few years now, I feel like a complete newbie. I recently decided it's time to build a new one, thus hopefully making a high end PC a bit more affordable.

I figure my first order of action is to update myself on Cases.. see if anything has changed much.. once I choose a case I'll move on to the other parts.

I have tons of questions.. I am hoping someone here knows of some very informative web links so hopefully I don't annoy anyone with my questions. I've conducted a few google and anandtech forum searchs but I am coming up fruitless at the present moment.

Currently I was wondering if cases are still standardized, I mean can I buy any motherboard and have no problem installing it provided the case is large enough? (I recall at a certain point certain motherboards were designed in a way that they could not be used with certain cases, such that the sockets in the back didn't line up and you'd have to be selective about which motherboard/case you buy).

Thanks.

Most midtower cases should have mobo mounts that will work with most if not ALL mATX and full ATX mobos. Some will handle miniITX as well it should as the smaller mobos have subsets of the ATX mounting holes. I've never seen a case that was advertised as suitable for full ATX mobos that wasn't. I can't explain your experience. I think misalignment was probably a PEBWAC issue... (problem exists between workbench and chair)
