Just picked up an Infocus ScreenPlay 5000 projector at Costco. BB has the 4805 which is DLP, but is only 480p instead of the 5000's 780p for $1099 - 100 rebate. I'm loving it so far! EXTREMELY bright, and very sharp image. Might want to check it out. -Tal

EDIT: There are little slips next to the projector display at Costco that show the screen and how to get it. I believe you can pay a little more and upgrade to even bigger if you like.

Just a couple little things - the projector is 720p, not 780p (I'm sure that's what you meant)

Also this is an LCD projector not a DLP like the 4805 you're comparing it to (not that you said it was DLP, but just mentioning it)

I think some would argue that the 4805 is still better than the 5000...and alot of folks recently got in on the Black Friday deal at Staples which was $500 AR.

I thought that other Staples BF thread said the 4805 for $500.00 was a remanufactured unit though? (Still not bad price but not like getting a brand new one)

Yeah that was a refurb unit.

Getting a new unit at Costco means an easy way to try it and if you're unhappy, Costco always takes them back. In my mind, 1045 - 300 for a new projector is better than 500 for a refurb. And yes, the 5000 is an LCD. I'm MORE than happy with the blacks though.

Yep refurbed but not that different from buying a new one...its from a trusted source and carries a 90 day warranty thru Infocus which for me is just one state over in Oregon so sending it in will not be an issue..furthermore I have experince with Infocus's customer service and its top notch.

Agreed though...in alot of cases id be leary of a refurb ...such as those 30" Philips TV ..something that is VERY heavy and expensive to ship. Or if it was from a company I did not know about. But its Staples and Infocus...to me I basically bought a new projector. If its got an issue its likely gonna show up in the first 90 days.

THe blacks are considerably better on the 4805 vs the 5000....if it was the other way around id go for a 5000 for sure.

Its amazing how much these projectors have come down, the 4805 is my 4th projector and when I got my first one about 5 years ago $1000 would barely buy anything..now you have several options in that price bracket.
I am excited for what the furure will bring. :)

I agree with all the above. I got the SP-5000 and sold my 4805 and regret it now
It is a terrible projector if it is not its brightness.

- Fan noise is louder
- SDE is noticeable
- Color setting is a nightmare
- Non HDTV signals look terrible

There are other posts on AVS that say the opposite. After the 09 firmware update, I can't even hear the fan usually. Also, if you're not sitting right next to the screen, I don't have any SDE. COLOR IS OUT OF THE BOX PERFECT ACCORDING TO AVS. I I guess if non-HDTV signals look like crap, then you have to tell that to my xbox playing divx movies over svid even.... cause they look pretty nice to me.

EDIT: I know, I know.... I bought it, so I like it. But it really does look pretty good. I may order up a panasonic from Costco.com to compare with.

If that panasonic is the AE900, just don't do it. You will end up returning that Infocus if you do.

Just letting you know, as I have tested both. Though the AE900 is a much better projector, it comes with a much larger price tag. I believe it is in the next price ballpark for projectors, but it also is another step up in quality.

Yeah the PT-AE900U is supposed to be pretty sweet...probably the best unit in the ~$2000 price range eh?

I still like DLP and probably will stick with the technology since screen door is not a problem and it still is easier for the technology to achieve better contrast...although I hear the PT-AE900U does a very good job in this dept for an LCD.

Here is Projector Centrals Top 20 Home Theater Projectors....its pretty accurate
if you read over @ AVS...

http://www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-multimedia-projectors.htm

Myself , I will wait until a 720p DLP is available in the $1000 bracket.

IMO.. there is no better projector than the 4805 for 1K ...for 2K id go for the PT-AE900U.

I would not spend any more than that because these things are advancing way too quickly , whatever you buy now will lose value way too fast.

If money was no object (man I wish this were the case.) id definately get one of the Sony 1080p projectors.
